For many of our clients, a family vacation isn’t complete unless the entire family is there four-legged members included. But commercial air travel has become increasingly hostile to pet owners, with restrictive weight limits, breed bans, and dangerous cargo hold requirements.
At Charter Wind, we believe your pet deserves the same safety and comfort as you do.
Whether you are relocating with a Golden Retriever or taking a French Bulldog to Paris, charter flights with pets offer the only stress-free solution. Here is everything you need to know before you book.
Can Pets Fly in the Cabin on a Charter Flight?
Can pets fly in the cabin on a charter flight? Yes. On a private charter, your pet flies in the main cabin with you, not in the cargo hold. There are no breed restrictions or size limits. Whether you have a Great Dane or a “snub-nosed” breed like a Pug (often banned by commercial airlines), they are welcome to fly “paws on the floor” right next to your seat.
The “Paws on the Floor” Policy
The most common question we receive is: “Does my dog need to be in a crate?”
In most cases, no.
We want your pet to be comfortable. Once the aircraft reaches cruising altitude, your pet is generally free to:
- Roam the cabin (within reason).
- Sleep on a designated pet blanket at your feet.
- Sit on the sofa next to you (we recommend bringing a throw blanket to protect the upholstery).
Safety First: During takeoff, landing, and turbulence, pets must be secured. This can be done via a seatbelt harness or a secure carrier, depending on the animal’s size.
Why Charter is the Only Option for Certain Breeds

Commercial airlines have strict embargoes that private aviation bypasses completely.
- Snub-Nosed Breeds: Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats are prone to respiratory issues and are banned from commercial cargo holds. On a charter flight, the cabin is pressurized and temperature-controlled, making it perfectly safe for them.
- Summer/Winter Embargoes: Airlines will not load pets into cargo if the runway temperature is too hot or too cold. Private jets board instantly, meaning your pet is never left sitting on a scorching tarmac.
- Anxiety Management: Anxious pets remain calm because they can see and smell you the entire flight.
Pet Travel Requirements: The Checklist
While the flight is luxurious, the paperwork is strict. Governments do not make exceptions for private jets.
Domestic Flights (USA)
- Age: Pets must be at least 8 weeks old.
- Rabies: Proof of current rabies vaccination is required.
- State Rules: Some states (like Hawaii) have strict quarantine rules, even for private arrivals.
International Flights (Europe/UK)
- Pet Passport: Mandatory for travel within the EU.
- Microchip: Must be ISO-compatible and implanted before the rabies vaccine.
- Tapeworm Treatment (UK): Dogs entering the UK must have a vet-administered tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before landing.
- DEFRA Airports: In the UK, you can only land at approved airports (like Biggin Hill or Farnborough) to clear pet customs.
The Cost of Flying with Pets

Unlike commercial airlines that charge “per pet,” with a private charter, you rent the entire aircraft.
- No Ticket Price: There is usually no extra “seat cost” for your pet.
- Cleaning Fees: Most operators charge a standard Pet Cleaning Fee (typically $250 – $500) to ensure the cabin is hypoallergenic for the next client.
- Damage: Owners are responsible if a pet damages the interior (chewing wood, soiling carpet), so we recommend walking your dog thoroughly before boarding.
Looking for a Deal? Try Empty Legs
If you are flexible, Empty Leg Flights are a fantastic way to fly your pet for up to 75% off. However, be aware that empty legs can be cancelled at the last minute. For critical travel (like moving homes), we always recommend a dedicated charter.
