For starters, arguably the largest event in the sporting calendar, are the Olympics. These occur every four years, in a different location each time. The last Summer Olympics were held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 2020 Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan, and the 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France. There are also the Winter Olympics. The next one, in 2022, will be held in Beijing, China. The Olympics are unique in the sense that all nations around the world get to compete, in a whole range of sports. It is a spectacle of the best athletes from around the world, all competing for the pride of their country. (Potentially can include the range of sports, other stats, etc)

Another huge global sporting event which happens every 4 years, is the FIFA World Cup. This is the championship determining which national soccer team is the best in the world. It brings out fierce competition and an enormous sense of nationalistic pride. You will see people from all over the world dressing up in their country’s colors. It is screened around the world, and millions of people watch it globally. The most recent one was in 2018 in Russia, which France won. The next one will be in Qatar, in 2022.

Another large soccer championship is the Euro Cup. As the name suggests, this is a competition to determine the best national soccer team in Europe. This tournament too, is played every fourth year. The latest one was played in 2016 in France. The Portuguese team one that one. The next one will be held in 2020 in different cities around Europe. Same as with the World Cup, true patriotic pride can be seen and felt everywhere you go.

Closer to home, there is the yearly Superbowl. The Superbowl is the championship game of the National Football League, or commonly known as the NFL. It is the culmination of the 2 highest ranked teams playing one another after the full regular season has finished. This year, it will be broadcast on February 2, 2019. The game will be between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. The Superbowl holds the title for the most-watched American broadcast. Due to its huge broadcasting popularity, large businesses create advertisements especially to be aired during this time. As such, it has almost become synonymous: the Superbowl and great ads.

Finally, the largest tennis events in the world are the Grand Slams. There are four Grand Slams, each occurring yearly in their respective cities. The tennis season starts in Melbourne, Australia each January on the hard courts. Then, the Roland Garros (or French Open) happens in Paris each May. These courts are clay. Arguably the most famous one is

the Wimbledon in London in the June/July months. These games are played on the grass courts, and each player must dress all in white. To finish off the season, the tennis stars play their ‘slam’ in New York City on the hard courts once more. This happens in late August until the start of September.
